Opportunitas Aequa

A Canadian NGO that uses football as a means to assist and encourage youth in war-affected regions of the world, such as Ecuador, Rwanda and Uganda, reaching over 10,000 children in 25 communities. Opportunitas Aequa supports local groups and partners to encourage community building through football in a sustainable and environment-friendly fashion. In Uganda, which is the focus of Football for Africa’s project, OA works closely with the Youth Coalition for Peace, addressing issues such as gender equity and peacebuilding. Our Football for Africa project will raise funds through the international schools tournament to assist OA in rehabilitating existing football pitches, planting native trees, funding workshops for coaches, organising Soccer Camps for Peace, providing sports equipment and organising local tournaments. The tournament registration fee, charity auctions, sponsors and spontaneous donations will help us raise the necessary funds. Global Vision International

In June 2011, four St. Stephen’s students and a teacher, travelled to Kenya to work among the former poachers communities of West Tsavo, between Nairobi and Mombasa, in a Global Vision International/World Society for the Protection of Animals project. The former poachers communities include four villages that have, since 2006, abandoned illegal poaching to adopt more sustainable livelihoods which include ecotourism, sustainable agriculture, water management projects and local crafts production. The four communities are now reaping the benefits of their choice but they still face great difficulties such as droughts, poverty and lack of funds to initiate new projects. Through the Football for Africa project, we intend to raise funds for sports equipment in the village schools, the organisation of a Former Poachers tournament, the construction of a football pitch and water system in Kasaini Lepolisi, a library in Mahandakini as well as supporting the game scouts who assist the Kenya Wildlife Service in fighting illegal poaching. The tournament registration fee, charity auctions, sponsors and spontaneous donations will help us raise the necessary funds.
